Tender and juicy together again

This restaurant was highlighted for being affordable and for their namesake Steve Burger – topped with lettuce, tomato, bacon, onion rings and their special sauce. Truly a pilgrimage for their faithful customers.

Steve’s Burgers certainly isn’t big: 19 seats, seven of them at a Formica counter. And it certainly isn’t fancy, with blackboard menu, checkerboard tablecloths, white paper plates and simple paper napkins.

But no one comes to Steve’s Burgers for its ambience and decor. They come for the juicy, tender, hefty burgers that many burger lovers maintain may be the best in the surrounding area of Bergen County, if not the entire state of New Jersey. Reviewers have recently named Steve’s Burgers one of 50 Best Burgers in America. Travel Channel’s “Food Paradise” voted it the best in the Tri-State area. And in a past summer, it has been named “Best Burger” at the Famous Food Festival in Jersey City. Most everything is homemade, from the coleslaw to the Russian dressing to the fries.

Originally, the burger joint served three things: cheeseburgers, hot dogs and french fries.

There are more items now, but the owner Stephen Chrisomalis’ dedication to using fresh ingredients keeps the menu short.

For example, in the past, Steve’s has offered a pulled pork burger on Tuesdays and corned beef on Thursdays. You have to check to see what’s available or upcoming.

For now, the items are not a part of the usual weekly menu. Chrisomalis said ensuring all ingredients are freshly made every day is what prevents him from adding too many things to the menu.

Having new items made only one day a week brings a sense of mystery and newness and makes that day more of an event.                                        “People come up with enough of their own crazy ideas for what to put on burgers,” Chrisomalis said.

But he still takes the time to experiment with his own craft.
