Travelers who feel tourist buses are an endurance test will no doubt be impressed by the aerodynamics and glamour, not to mention Batmobile-resemblance, of the futuristic electric Superbus.
The impressive vehicle, a cross between a bus and stretch limo, was shown off this week at a public transportation expo in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and is being considered for a route between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The 49-foot Superbus was created over a seven-year period by a Dutch team at TU Delft University in the Netherlands. The team includes former astronaut Wubbo Ockels, a mission specialist on the Challenger space shuttle.
The bus can carry 23 passengers and is electric-powered. It was designed – at a cost approaching $18 million – to accommodate tourists and business commuters.

The Superbus is made of lightweight carbon fiber, powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries, and about the same length and width as a public bus, “but with the height of a conventional SUV,” according to a press release. With its low air resistance, the six-wheel vehicle can reach speeds of 155mph.
The bus was displayed at the World Exhibition of the International Association of Public Transport, and during its time in the UAE will also be taken for a test drive by the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport.
